December 4th

This week we will be finishing up our math unit in multiplication and starting Unit 6 - division.

In reading, the story this week will be "The Go Around Dollar". This story tells how money is passed around and explains the different parts of a dollar. We will be working on text components and sequencing a story. We are also reading several versions of the Gingerbread Boy story. We will be comparing and contrasting these stories.

In Food Is Elementary, we will be cooking our first dish from Egypt. Please ask your student about the fabulous food they tasted.

To go along with our reading of gingerbread boy versions, our spelling paragraph is:
Gingerbread cookies can be very tricky! Gingerbread men and babies can be extremely sly as they are running very fast across the countryside. They run and they run but nobody can every catch them. These clever cookies can run away from people and animals like the devious fox and the gentle old man and lady. Apparently, gingerbread cookies are resourceful and quick thinkers.

November 30th

I hope your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving break. I'm sure some of you are as amazed that it is almost December as I am!

In math, we are working on multiplication facts to 9. Please see the links below for practice. I will also be sending home flashcards shortly for students to review nightly.

Our money unit starts this week in reading. Great timing around the holidays! Students will be learning how money has changed over time and how it varies from country to country. If you have any money or related item that your child can share, please send it in. Anything of great value is best to be kept at home.

Our spelling paragraph this week is:
My Christmas Wish
I am hoping to get amazing things for Christmas. One dream gift would be an iPod to be playing my favorite tunes. Another dreamy present would be a spectacular toy like a DSI or mini projector. But the best gift would be cherished time with family and friends! I hope Christmas is swell!
** our focus skill is -ing endings and base/root words

November 16th

This week's spelling paragraph is:
Rib-bit or Croak?
Some people may think frogs and toads are the same, however, they are not. To begin with, frogs live in wet places like marshes and swamps, but toads make dry places like deserts their home. Another difference is frogs have long, strong back legs for leaping and toads have shorter back legs for walking along the dusty ground. One similarity is they are both cold-blooded amphibians. Although they may look similar, clearly they are not.

We are working on comparing and contrasting animals and their habitats. Students will be researching and completing their own animal habitat poster with a partner.

Wednesday we will be having our chapter 4 test in math. Please be practicing multiplication facts 0-5 at home with your child.
A great site with many multiplication games is:
http://www.multiplication.com/interactive_games.htm

Don't forget that conferences start on Friday. Please try to make the time scheduled for you as there aren't many available slots to reschedule to. It is important with so many conferences that you arrive on time and I will try my best to end on time. I would ask that you bring your child with you.

Week of November 9th

Our spelling paragraph this week is:
In reading, we have been learning about many different animal habitats. One habitat could be the desert where you can find slithering rattlesnakes and poisonous scorpions. Another habitat is the deep, blue ocean. There gigantic whales, slippery eels, and playful dolphins live. Our last habitat is the deep, dark forest. Timid deer, scary cougars, howling wolves, and fierce bear all live in the woods. Truly, animals all reside in very different habitats.

** Just a reminder that punctuation and capitalization DO COUNT!!!

In math, we will continue to work on multiplying by 0, 1, 2, 4, 5, and 10. Please see the link below.

In reading, we are finishing up our animal habitat unit with the story "Crinkleroot's Guide to Animal Habitats".

Don't forget Wednesday is Veteran's Day and no school. Our Veteran's Day program is Monday morning at 8:45 for those of you who would like to attend.

Week of October 19th

This week's spelling paragraph is:
Unusual Flying Creatures
Bats are unique creatures. They use sound waves to capture insects while they are flying. This is called echolocation. Bats are the only mammals who can fly. They soar through the night sky. These animals sleep hanging upside down in caves, barns, under bridges, or high up in trees. Definitely, bats are unusual wild animals.

In reading we are reading the story "Make Way For Ducklings". The focus this week is animals in the city and how they adapt. An informative site for students about animals and their habitats is:
http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/?source=pincl
Don't forget you can go online to:
http://www.sraimagineit.com/g_login.html
To read the story at home or if your student forgets their decodable Thursday night.

In math, we are continuing to work on subtraction with regrouping. A fun subtraction game site is:
http://www.weeklyreader.com/kids/games/subtraction.asp

Weekly Reporter is Angela K.:
We had a wonderful week. We did Food is Elementary. We learned about cutting apples right and knife safety. We have ladybugs. It is how many points you have. I have 23.5. We read "One Small Place In a Tree". It is about how it became a home for lots of animals. We had a wonderful week at school.

October 12th

Welcome to another fun filled week! We start Food is Elementary today. If you have not returned your child's permission slip, they are unable to participate until that is returned. We are still needing $8 for serveral students. If you have not sent in $8 for your students, please do so as soon as possible. We need home support to sustain this very educational, interesting program.

The spelling paragraph this week is:
Amazing Buzzing Bees
Bees are small, flying insects. Their homes, or habitats, are buzzing, busy hives. Their bodies have different parts like two honey baskets, a proboscis, and a fierce stinger. Worker bees, drones, and a queen all reside in the hive. Bees are truly interesting bugs!

We begin our new reading unit - Animal Habitats. If you have any habitats or animal mounts you would let us borrow, we would love to have real items to view.

We finish unit 2 in math -adding 3 digit numbers - on Tuesday. Wednesday we will be starting subtracting with regrouping.

Your child may have told you I broke my foot. Yes this is true.

Weekly Reporter is Parker:
This week I did many things. One example is I took AR tests on the computer. I have 13.3. My goal is 30.0 points. I am 44.3% there! Another example is my teacher is reading to us Charlotte's Web. Charlotte just wrote "Some Pig" in her web above the pig pen. Finally I measured my plants for science and drew a picture of our plant. As you can see I had a great week!

October 5th

This week's spelling is a poem:

With A Friend
I can talk with a friend

and walk with a friend

and share my umbrella in the rain

I can play with a friend

and stay with a friend

and learn with a friend

and explain

I can eat with a friend

and compete with a friend

and even sometimes disagree

I can ride with a friend

and take pride with a friend

A friend can mean so much to me!

In reading we will be finishing up our friendship unit. Friday, students will complete a unit test. Our next unit is Animal Habitats.

For math this week, we will continue to work on addition with regrouping. Please make sure your child is completing their homework each night. If homework is not completed, then students lose recess time to complete work. On average - 5 students are missing recess to complete homework. It is a grade level expectation to have math homework each night. Thank you for your help in making sure this goal is accomplished!

Just a reminder: If your student has a fever or feeling ill, PLEASE keep them home. If they come to school sick, there is strong possibility they are exposing other children. Also, students need to be without a fever for at least 48 hours. Any work missed needs to be made up. Please be checking Powerschool to see how your child is doing.

September 28th

Here we are - another wonderful week in room 14!

Please remember that your child needs to have an AR book every night. Last week students read books from the Magic Tree House series. This series website is:

http://www.randomhouse.com/kids/magictreehouse/

Students have really enjoyed the different books and found that they are easy reads too.

In reading this week, we are reading the story Teammates about Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese. We are discussing segregation, integrity, and friendship.

Math's focus is 2 digit addition with regrouping. We are also working on problem solving.

Yahoo! We started our Plant Growth and Development science kit this week. Students planted seeds. We are looking at the parts of a seed and what our plants will need to grow.

Last Thursday we read with our first grade reading buddies in Mrs. Watt's room.

The spelling paragraph is:

I hurt my knee outside while I was climbing a tree with my friend. Quickly, my friend ran to phone my mother. “Hurry, Josh fell and hurt himself!” exclaimed Ethan. Mom rushed over and saw I had injured my wrist too. She remarked, “Let’s go to the emergency room.” Fortunately, the doctor thought I would be just fine.

Don't forget to try to collect money for our jog-a-thon. Just 1 more week left. Let's try hard to reach our classroom goal of $800.

Student Review of the Week is from Jose:

I had a great week. First I took my MAP test on the computer and my score was 200. Then I took my Magic Tree Hourse book on the computer and I got 8 out of 10. Last we did the Double Trouble experiment. I chose B but it was D. That was a fun weekend.

If you would like to order books, just mark it on the back order form for each order you wish to purchase from. Please write one check to Scholastic for all the orders – it does not have to be separate checks. Book orders are due Friday, October 2nd. Books usually arrive 2 – 3 weeks after the order is placed.

Monday, September 21, 2009

Week of September 21st

This week we are reading the story "Beauty and the Beast". Our focus is on fairy tales. Remember you can use the links below and the password that was sent home to have your child listen to the story online, practice vocabulary words, and play fun reading games.

In math, we are finishing up chapter 1. There will be a chapter test on Thursday. There will not be any math homework on Thursday or Friday.

Our spelling paragraph is:

How can I prepare a peanut butter and jelly sandwich? First, I need to get two slices of bread. Then, open the peanut butter and smooth it over one slice of bread. Repeat the same process with the jelly and other slice of bread. Finally, put the slices together and munch on the yummy pb and j meal. Certainly, my stomach would be pleased!

Spelling tests are given on THURSDAYS. We write our new paragraph on Fridays. Please take time to study these paragraphs at home each night.

Don't forget to be collecting Jog-A-Thon donations - every little bit helps! Our classroom goal is to collect $800 by October 8th.

Did you know ...
Starting your day with a good breakfast boosts your energy, increases your attention span, and heightens your sense of well-being. You’ll be in better control of your emotions. Skipping breakfast can have an effect on alertness and work productivity.
Healthy snacks are allowed in our classroom, but please make sure your child gets a nutritious breakfast prior to coming to school.

Have a wonderful week!

**The focus for spelling this week is comparing and contrasting. We also are working on proper and common nouns.

Next week in reading we will be reading a story called Good-bye, 382 Shin Dang Dong. This is a story about friends that have to move away from each other.

Math will be a continued focus on place value. There has been math homework every night. Please make sure you are checking your student's folder.

Friday we have our big Jog-A-Thon kick off. Please consider becoming a sponsor. This fundraiser helps bring many wonderful programs to Lincoln. Also consider getting donations. Every dollar helps!!! It would be wonderful if room 14 would have 100% support.

Student Week Review is Jewel's:

Wow! What a week! First we had our first ladybugs on the wall. Taelor and Makayla are our first ladybugs on the wall. We also have a book fair. At the book fair there's a bunch of books, pointers, and pens. All of us got our song books. We have our first song that we put in it. Then today we had our first fire drill. And today we had the first spelling test. It was the longest one I have ever done. Last night we had Open House but I didn't go. As you can see I had a great week!

Week of August 31st

We have completed our first week in third grade! What an amazing group of kiddos. It has been a joy getting to know all of them.

For spelling, we have a paragraph instead of a list. This teaches students more than words. It helps with capitalization, punctuation, sentence structure, and writing paragraphs. Tests will be on Thursdays. This week's paragraph is:

Friendship is important to room 14. Having friends means we have someone to play with outside. We might have fun playing soccer. Another good reason for having a friend is they can help me. When I get hurt, they help me up. Clearly, friends are valuable to everyone!

Each week students write their own Weekly Review. I will select 1 student to spotlight each week. This week's student is Griffin:

This week I did many things. First, we made red and black ladybugs with white eyes. Second, we read Rugby and Rosie and took an AR for it. Last, we made teachers and colored it with a red apple. Now you know, I had a great weekend!

Math next week will be on patterns and place value. For reading, we will be reading a folk tale called Damon and Pythias. This is a story that shows friendship.

Please don't forget that there is homework EVERY night. Students need to be reading an AR book each night and having their pink weekly focus sheets signed. Math homework will beginning soon.

I hope you have a wonderful 3 day weekend and I'll see everyone on Tuesday!

April 27th

The spelling paragraph this week is:
Brain Pain
Do you think the WASL is difficult? I don’t In Washington State, we take the WASL every year after second grade. WASL stands for Washington Assessment of Student Learning. Some students thought the test was difficult, but others believe it was as simple as taking candy from a baby! Our skills are measured in reading, mathematics, writing, and science. Our testing took four days to complete. If you were absent from school, you had to take the test when you returned. Hopefully, I passed this exam!

In Math we are working on probability and likelihood something may happen. Practice websites are:
http://www.hbschool.com/activity/balloon_bonanza/
http://www.hbschool.com/activity/bright_balloons/

We continue to study about communities in Reading. We have been learning about the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 and The Disappearing Island.
Some information can be found on:

April 13th

WASL is here! Please make sure your child is getting to bed early and is well rested. It is also important they have a well balanced breakfast. Students may bring snacks to school to have during the WASL.

To help students feel well rested, there will not be any homework sent home unless they do not complete an assignment in class. There will also not be a spelling paragraph to study.

It is important that you try to have your child to school on time and schedule appointments in the afternoon.

Wish us luck!

Monday, March 23, 2009

Week of March 23rd

There will not be a spelling paragraph or list this week. We are focusing our efforts on preparing for the WASL. The WASL will be given April 13th-17th.

Students need to complete reading an Arthur chapter book at home and pass the AR test by Friday. My intent is to interest students in various reading series.

Tuesday night is McLincoln night at McDonalds on 395 and Kennewick Ave. Please come visit us from 5-7. I will be serving up desserts from 6-7. I'll look forward to seeing you all!

March 2nd

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! Enjoy this link as we celebrate a great character and writer.

In reading, we continue studying the Earth, Moon, and Sun. Our story this week is: The Moon Seems to Change. Please keep tracking with your student the moon's shape each night.

In math, we will be finishing up our fractions unit. Some practice sites are:

Our spelling paragraph is:

Our Amazing Moon

High up in the nighttime sky, we can find our moon. It seems to change shape, but it really isn't. It actually is showing what the sun illuminates. A waxing gibbous is when just 1/2 of the moon is lit by sunlight. The new moon has a sliver showing. In contrast, the full moon appears completely. Clearly, our moon has many phases.

Please pay careful attention to commas.
Don't forget that Friday is Early Release for report card prep.

February 23rd

We welcome back Jasmin Mendoza. Jasmin has been out this year recovering from a bone marrow transplant. The kids are very excited to have her back - as she is very excited to be back. You can help Jasmin and our classroom by keeping your child home if they are ill. If they are diagnosed with strep throat or anything other than a basic cold, please let me know.

Our spelling paragraph this week is:

Wonders in Space
Many wonders are found in our solar system. The Sun is made out of different gases like hydrogen and helium. Earth has gravity and is the only planet we know that can have living creatures. Jupiter is so large it could fit up to 1000 Earths inside it. Scientist call Pluto a “dwarf planet”, because of its small size. Our Solar System is a big neighborhood!

We are studying the Earth, Moon, and Sun in both reading and science. Please help your child to locate information to bring in and share with our class.

This week in Food is Elementary, students got to taste sushi. Thank you for supporting the belief of eating healthy by supplying healthy heart snacks for our Valentine's Day party. The kids seem to really enjoy it.

The math concepts this week are centered around fractions. Please also continue studying the multiplication math facts at home.

I have noticed a decline in students returning homework nightly. Homework is assigned every night and expected to be returned back to school completed the following day.

February 2nd

It's Groundhog's Day! Unfortunately, Phil saw his shadow and there will be six more weeks of winter. Our spelling paragraph goes along with this:

Frightened Phil
Phil awoke one February morning. He lazily climbed up out of his hole beneath the ground. Poking his head out, he was frightened by his gigantic shadow. He screeched loudly, "Help!" Phil scurried back into his den to take cover. Looks like we've got six more weeks of winter! Poor frightened, fearful Phil!

This site tells you about Phil. http://www.groundhog.org/ or http://www.theholidayspot.com/groundhogday/

In reading, we are reading Uncle Jed's Barbershop. This talks about segreation and the Great Depression. You might want to help increase your child's understanding by discussing these major events at home.

January 26th, 2009

Hopefully your child shared with you about our field trip to Ramona Quimby. Our spelling paragraph this week is based on it. We are also working on oy/oi words, punctuation, and a/an articles. Please enjoy Beverly Cleary's website:

What An Act Ramona!

Full of anticipation, we boarded a bus for Richland. Beezus, an actress, started the play. We thought the most enjoyable part was the Quimby's voyage to Whopper Burger because of the kind, old man. Our favorite character was Ramona because she was a funny and annoying sister. At the end of the play, we were excused to ride the bus back to Kennewick.

Our story this week in reading is Madam CJ Walker. Students can be looking for hair product ads or information about Madam Walker to bring in for our concept / question board. I have added this link so you can read the story at home and practice with your student. Each child has their login and password information.

If you have any questions, please email me.

Math: We will be finishing up unit 6 and completing our mid-year assessment. Next unit - MULTIPLICATION! YAHOO!

Mid-Trimester reports go home on Friday. Please sign the envelope and send it back with your child on Monday. There will not be yellow slips this week. The mid-trimester reports will take the place of those.

Tuesday, January 20, 2009

January 19th

There will not be a spelling paragraph this week due to the limited class time.

Thursday is "field trip" day. Please have your child on time or they will miss the bus to Richland. We will depart promptly at 8:45 am. If your child has a Lincoln Leopard shirt, please have them wear it or yellow/black that day.

Friday is a no school professional day. Teachers will be in a training on our reading series "Imagine It!". Enjoy the 3 day weekend!

Tuesday, January 13, 2009

January 12th, 2009

We have started studying Geometry. This was one of the weakest areas for our class on the MAP tests in the fall. We have been learning about lines, segments, and rays. Other terms include parallel, intersecting, obtuse, acute, and isosceles. Below is a good site for practice with this concept.:

http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/frames_asid_270_g_1_t_3.html?open=instructions

Students have also started taking multiplication time tests. Each timed test they pass, they will earn parts to a banana split. At the end of the year, we will have a banana split part. A good site to practice is:

http://www.playkidsgames.com/games/apples/savetheApples.htm

In reading we are studying money. I am AMAZED at all the different kinds of money that your children have been bringing in. Please help them to find pictures and information online to share with the class and post on our concept question board. A good place to look might be http://www.kids.gov/k_5/k_5_money.shtml. This week's story "The Go Around Dollar" helps to explain the parts of a dollar.

Monday is Dr. Martin Luther King Day. We will not have school. This week's spelling paragraph is about this great leader.

Honoring a Great Man
Martin Luther King Jr. was a famous African American man. He was born in 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. Martin Luther King Jr. was a pastor who wanted equal rights for all people. He believed black and white people should no longer be separate. In 1953 he married Coretta Scott and had two children. He is famous for his speech “I Have A Dream” which he gave in 1963. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. At the age of 39, he was killed in Tennessee. We honor him this year on January 19th.

Enjoy your 3 day weekend!
