This week in Food is Elementary we learned the importance of vitamins A, B, C, D, and E. This was related to eating a "rainbow" of foods. A tracking sheet was sent home. This is due back Nov. 3rd. Visit this website for some fun food activities: http://www.foodchamps.org/
Our spelling paragraph is:
Buggy Delight
A bat's eating habits are unique. Each night a bat dines on half of its own weight of insects like mosquitoes and other bugs. A Hammerheaded bat of Africa feasts at night on fruit such as the apple. Fish and frogs are a tasty treat for some bats. Clearly, bats can have very different diets.
Please be sure to be studying this at home with your child.
In Reading, we begin our new unit on Animal Habitats and Homes. If you find any articles in the newspaper, please send these in with your child. If you have a great picture to share, please also send this in. Reading calendars are due Monday.
Our math focus continues this week on measurement: area and perimeter.
Friday is Halloween. I wish everyone a safe, fun filled night!
Welcome to 3rd grade at Lincoln Elementary! This will hopefully be a useful tool to you to follow our classroom and keep up on the events going on in Room 15

Week of October 20th

Today (Tuesday) we enjoyed a visit from Barbara Joosse. She told students that being a writer comes from your imagination and your experiences. If you would like to know more about this author, please visit her website at http://www.barbarajoosse.com/
We are starting our study of bats. We have learned they are mammals, nocturnal, and don't actually suck a person's blood. (Many students were relieved!) Be asking your student about what they have learned. Some interesting websites for them to find out more information are:
This week's spelling paragraph is about bats. A homework sheet for this paragraph was sent home tonight (Tuesday).
Thursday, Lincoln will be visited by the Pacific Science Center. Third grade will be learning about sound, vibrations, and pitch. Please take time to ask your child about this learning experience. A big thank you to LEAP for bringing the traveling van to us.
In math, we are starting unit 3. This unit is about measurement. Please point out at home all the different ways you may use measuring: cooking, distance, sewing, etc.
A big thank you to Yokes Fresh Foods. They donated a $50 gift card to our third grade to use with our Food is Elementary program. THANK YOU!
Your child may have told you. My son, Alex, broke his shoulder Sunday in a hockey game. This required me to miss school on Monday to see a specialist. I am hopeful he will have a full recovery. This may require a few more days off to attend doctor appointments. I appreciate your patience and understanding.

Week of 10/13/08
Unfortunately, our classroom blog site is unable to make posts from school. I am still in need of parent volunteers to help weekly in the classroom. Let me know if you are interested.
We started Food is Elementary last week. Students learned about hand washing and the steps to use a knife safely. This week we looked at fat in milk. I'm sure you will hear how the family should be using skim milk. Please take time to look at food labels with your child.
In math, we will be taking our unit 2 test. The focus was on partial sums addition and trades first subtraction.
Our story in reading this week is "Teammates". This is a story about Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese. It is important that your child is reading at home every night.
The spelling paragraph this week is:
Jackie Robinson
Jackie Robinson was the first black professional baseball player in the major leagues. He played for the Brooklyn Dodgers. His position was short stop. Pee Wee Reese became a good teammate of Jackie’s. He stood beside Jackie as his friend.
Having children learn paragraphs helps teach writing, spelling, capitals, and punctuation. Please be sure you are practicing this paragraph at home.
Our character trait focus is respect this month. Please try to reinforce this at home. Thank you to all the parents that helped with the jog-a-thon. Lincoln appreciates your contributions and support!
